Tel. 952802745
Avda. Juan Carlos 1,
(Edif. Parque Central)
Estepona 29680

Although the law states that Shops, Bars, Cafeterias and other establishments need to be adapted to wheelchair users/special needs this is not always the case.  Quite often a bar offers an adapted bathroom only to find that there is a huge step to enter the bar, thus placing an inicial barrier.  I will be added as and when possible places that I have visited that only offer full accessibility, in other words no barriers.  If any guests visiting this blog can recommend any 100% no barriers places to visit in Andalucia, plus have photographs I would be delighted to add them to this blog.  I would appreciate any contribution, thank you.

La Jijonenca Cafeteria in Estepona (Cervecería, Heladería artesano, Tapas, Montaditos) offers full wheelchair friendly facilities.  There are no barriers, inside there is a slight ramp leading to the adapated bathroom (photo below).

Entrance to Bar:  No steps
Entrance to Bathroom:  Via ramp (slight inclination)
Inside Bar:  Air-conditioned
Outside Terrace:  No steps

Hiring People with Disabilities

I want to share this positive article with you, although not referring particularly to Andalucia, more so to the disability workforce in general.

Barbara Otto is the principle of Think Beyond the Label, a private-public collaborative venture based in the US that aims to improve recruitment opportunities for qualified job candidates with disabilities.

Quote:
People with disabilities are creative problem-solvers and technology adopters with fresh perspectives that organisations need

We've found they have low rates of absenteeism and turnover, which reduces a company's recruitment and retention costs.

Barbara Otto, (Think Beyond the Label) thank you for your positive attitude.

                                                                               (Autor desconocido)

Close your eyes,
think in all that caused you to smile in the year that is finishing
And forget the rest ..
I hope those smiles multiply themselves for 2012.
Happy New Year 2012

THE QUEST TO INCREASE PUBLIC MOBILITY

Approved Decree:
From 2019 all buildings of more than two storeys must have lifts
I recently picked up this news from our local press www.surinenglish.com and http://www.diariosur.es the original article was written by Antonio Montilla.

The Andalusian government this week approved a decree declaring that from 2019 all buildings of more than two floors in the region must install lifts. Micaela Navarro, head of the Equality department explained that the new regulations are not only a matter of modernising architecture in the region, but also of wiping from the public conscience long-held prejudices about the way disabled people live.

Breaching the decree would incur fines of up to 300,000 euros. The mandate seeks to benefit not only people with disabilities, but also older citizens, pregnant women and people with restricted mobility, amongst others, which implicates around 40% of the population of Andalucia.

Navarro commented that the decree marks a new era in the quest to increase public mobility, and that it attempts to adapt the environment to its citizens, and not the reverse scenario. In addition, open air spaces with a recreational, educational or cultural capacity must also provide alternative accessible routes for those with reduced mobility.

The regions’s beaches are included within this requirement, and must provide amphibious chairs or similar technical aids wherever beach rescue teams are found. As regards public transport, each bus company will have to provide 10-15% more accessible buses with respect to fleets of ten or more vehicles.
Tourist accommodation will also have to increase the proportion of accessible rooms.

It is wonderful news and truly brings joy to my heart, for many sufferers it has been long overdue, but let us all agree this is finally a positive step in the right direction.

Covering the Costa del Sol

For the time being I will be focusing on the Costa del Sol region in Andalucia, mainly because this is the area where I reside and am familiar with local activities. However, as this blog expands I do hope to incorporate other regions.

I would appreciate any in put/feedback from readers interested in this community topic.

Thanking you for your cooperation.
