What is especially nice this year are the "casetas" are at the bottom zone of the feria (Avda. Pablo Ruíz Picasso).  A lot of work has gone into flattened the area, making it more accesible for people with mobility problems.

Lo que es especialmente agradable este año es que las "casetas" están en la zona inferior del feria (Avda. Pablo Ruíz Picasso). Mucho trabajo ha entrado aplastó el área, lo haciendo más accesible para personas con problemas de movilidad.

Although the law states that Shops, Bars, Cafeterias and other establishments need to be adapted to wheelchair users/special needs this is not always the case.  Quite often a bar offers an adapted bathroom only to find that there is a huge step to enter the bar, thus placing an inicial barrier.  I will be added as and when possible places that I have visited that only offer full accessibility, in other words no barriers.  If any guests visiting this blog can recommend any 100% no barriers places to visit in Andalucia, plus have photographs I would be delighted to add them to this blog.  I would appreciate any contribution, thank you.

 

La Jijonenca Cafeteria in Estepona (Cervecería, Heladería artesano, Tapas, Montaditos) offers full wheelchair friendly facilities.  There are no barriers, inside there is a slight ramp leading to the adapated bathroom (photo below).

El alcalde de Málaga inaugura el servicio 'Disfruta la playa', que ayuda al baño a las personas con alguna discapacidad · El año pasado fueron unos 1.700 usuarios los que pudieron disfrutar de esta asistencia.

The mayor of Málaga inaugurates the 2012 service 'Enjoy the beach', that helps people some disability bath in the sea.  Last year there were 1,700 users that enjoyed this assistance.

Here is a wonderful link to the an information pack put together by the Town Hall of Málaga, it is in Spanish and called "Disfruta la playa" which means "enjoy the beach".  There is all sorts of data what beaches are adapted, have ramps, adapted wheelchairs, showers, etc. 

Included are some telephone numbers to call and it is always advisable to check beforehand to give a quick call to see that the facilities are still on offer.

TORREMOLINOS train station to have vital accessibility

Currently the station at Torremolinos lacks vital ramps or lifts, persons with reduced mobility, wheelchair users or even those with pushchairs are not able to access the platforms.



Finally after years of complaints by passengers and three requests from the Town Hall to Renfe, the Ministry of Development has agreed to upgrade the facilities. The work is due for completion within the next two years.

The train line runs from Malaga City, stopping at Malaga Airport and finally to the town of Fuengirola.

Then look no further, deep in the Andalucian countryside, El Reguelo a semi-detached holiday home is available to rent with adapted facilities for wheelchair users.

The house has private garden, patio, roof terrace and dip pool.
Sleeps from 2-6 people with the option of a folding bed or cot if required.

This area is very peaceful, Casa Rural El Reguelo is situated on a quiet country road between Fuensanta de Martos and Castillo de Locubin, there are no bars or shops here!

Peace reigns along with bird song, cockerel calls, croaking frogs and roaming goats.


• The ground floor with the double bedroom and en-suite wheelchair adapted shower-room,
a standard wheelchair of 60cm will enter the bathroom door entrance.


• No ramp needed to the patio and dip pool –
there is no access chair for the pool, just standard steps.


• There is a step at the front door, for which we have portable ramp


• Kitchen has worktops are 91 cm high and the space between them is 95cm.


• The garden has too many steps to get a wheelchair down to it.

TWO vital COMPONENTS

I’ve been asked to find a selection of adapted hotels for a special needs UK group wishing to visit in 2010. This will be for 2 wheel chair users, 4 walkers with slight mobility difficulties and their carers. Initially I thought, yes no problem, I’ll “google” it.

I found a couple of what I thought perfect hotels in Benalmadena. By coincidence I happened to be in that area so I took the opportunity to see at first hand what was on offer.

Why oh why do hotels go to all the trouble of putting wonderful, non-slip, slightly graded user friendly ramps all over there hotel and then cannot provide one room that has an adapted wheel in shower? It just does not make sense to me. For any wheel chair user these two components in any hotel are absolutely vital and go hand in hand.

Stay tuned for a real report, I’ll be continuing my investigation with plenty more hotels in Benalmadena and Fuengirola and post up all my findings.
